Hermit Loop

Grand Canyon was shaped and carved with help from the Colorado River and the Hermit Loop gives participants an amazing opportunity to see that influence from a broad view as well as up close. The Hermit Loops starts on the historic Bright Angel Trail and spends the first night at Havasupai Garden (formerly Indian Garden). From here participants will traverse along the Tonto Trail. As this trail contours around drainages the views of the Colorado River will leave you stunned. After a night in the stunning monument canyon named for the iconic monolith that sits in the middle of the canyon, the trip will head down to the river and camp at Granite Falls Rapid. Granite Falls is one of the largest rapids in Grand Canyon and one of only two rapids in Grand Canyon with 'falls' in the name! (The other rapid is the iconic Lava Falls!) From here the trip will hike up and over to Hermit Creek where evidence still exists of one of the earliest inner canyon tourist camps. There is also the opportunity if time allows

Geology Hike and Camp: South Rim

Grand Canyon is a remarkable and world-class landform and is one of the few earthly features easily visible from space. It is a grand geologic laboratory on a continental-size scale and continues to amaze and perplex everyone from the casual visitor to the determined scientist. This class will highlight many of the age-old questions that have been posed and answered about Grand Canyon’ origin and consider the ones that still remain. Over a series of informative talks, short hikes, visits to dramatic overlooks, and in-class conversations, participants in this class will receive a thorough primer on the historic and ongoing geologic processes that created the grandest of canyons. Topics will include a discussion of the various types of rock found here, canyon formation theories, depositional environments, and the famed geologists that have helped unravel the mysteries of the region. Low- to mid-intensity field excursions along and below the South Rim will be supplemented with photos, maps and handouts. Whether
